
Greenwich High School’s boys cross country team closed out its regular season by running to victories against Wilton, Bridgeport Central, Harding, and Bassick in a meet held on Tuesday at Greenwich Point.
“Yesterday (Tuesday) was an exciting day for our program with Senior Day highlighting our final home meet of the season,” Greenwich coach Sean Astle said. “We had strong effort and performances across the board as our team now transitions into the playoffs/postseason portion of the season.”
Junior Christian Zawislack once again paced the Cardinals, running away the competition with a 36-second victory and personal record of time of 15:39 over the 3-mile course at Greenwich Point.
“Christian Zawislack continues to have a breakout season,” Astle said. “He continues to get better each and every week. He has been working incredibly hard for years and now he has finally emerged as one of the top runners in the FCIAC and the entire state of Connecticut. He is a fierce competitor and we can’t wait to see how he does this postseason.”

Wilton junior Alexander Cohen placed second in the race, crossing the finish line in 15:58.13, while teammate Michael Burns, a senior, finished third with a time of 16:02.68.
Freshman Matteo Chiesara gave the Cardinals a fourth-place finish, posting a time of 16:16.90. Jack Broide (9th, 17:10, senior), Aubrey Niederhoffer (12th, 17:52, junior), Mateo Gigliani (13th, 17:58, senior), Dylan Jelliffe (15th, 18:09, sophomore), and Thomas Donovan (17th, 18:22, sophomore) rounded out the scoring for GHS.
Also with strong performances and new course PR’s for Greenwich were Ryan Newcomb (18:34), Thomas Andruss (19:08), Charlie Zukauskas (19:42), Lucas Grandjacques (19:48), Declan O’Reagan (19:59), and Oliver Sheppard (20:10).

Sophomore Shafi Reilly led the way from start to finish for Greenwich in the meet’s junior varsity race at Greenwich Point on Tuesday, picking up his first victory of the season in a time of 10:03. Closely behind finishing second overall was freshman teammate Ryan Johnson (10:08). Freshman Mano Tertiropoulos was 10th overall (10:52). Francisco Rodrigues (18th, 11:23) and Brady Lisjak (23rd, 12:07) rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals in the junior varsity race.
Greenwich’s varsity team finished the meet with a 4-1 record, defeating Wilton, Bassick, Warren Harding and Bridgeport Central. The Cardinals’ lone loss on the day came against Ridgefield.
For the season, Greenwich finished with a strong record of 12-5. The Cardinals will prepare to compete at the FCIAC Championships, which will take place Oct. 19 at Waveny Park in New Canaan. After that, the CIAC Class LL Championships will be held at Wickham Park on Oct. 29.
